Local organizers are achieving monumental feats with scant resources and almost no national attention. They are democracy’s unsung heroes, and their stories deserve to be told.

A group of 16 organizers from around the country came to Boston last week to begin a 20-week training session to advance political, civil, and human rights in their communities.

Jarret Anthony Luter, a Louisiana-based grassroots organizer and political action chairman for the Baton Rouge NAACP, was grading papers in his office last month when his phone rang. He didn’t pick up. The news he missed he would later call transformative, and it arrived in his inbox soon after — Luter had been selected as one of 16 inaugural members of the Organizing Accelerator, a new 20-week fellowship program for social justice organizers, advocates, and leaders from across the country.

Community groups in Massachusetts and across the country that want to take a stand again racism, climate change, LGBTQ rights and more need the resources and connections to make an impact.
